چکیده

The IBEX-Lo instrument on the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) mission measures interstellar neutral (ISN) helium atoms. detection of atoms is made through negative hydrogen (H$^-$) ions sputtered by from conversion surface. energy spectrum ISN broad and overlaps four lowest electrostatic analyzer (ESA) steps. Consequently, response function for does not correspond to nominal step transmission. Moreover, laboratory calibration incomplete because it difficult produce narrow-energy atom beams that are expected Here, we analyze observations in ESA steps 1-4 derive relative in-flight We compare ratios observed count rates as a mean estimated using Warsaw Test Particle Model (WTPM). WTPM uses global heliosphere model calculate charge exchange gains losses estimate secondary population. find modeled energies atoms, unlike their fluxes, very sensitive local medium parameters. obtained responses supplement enable more detailed quantitative studies signal. A similar procedure applied may be used complement next-generation IMAP-Lo Mapping Acceleration Probe (IMAP) mission.

Charting the Interstellar Magnetic Field Causing the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (ibex) Ribbon of Energetic Neutral Atoms

The interstellar magnetic field (ISMF) near the heliosphere is a fundamental component of the solar galactic environment that can only be studied using polarized starlight. The results of an ongoing survey of the linear polarizations of local stars are analyzed with the goal of linking the ISMF that shapes the heliosphere to the nearby field in interstellar space. We present new results on the ...

LOCAL INTERSTELLAR NEUTRAL HYDROGEN SAMPLED IN SITU BY IBEX Citation

Hydrogen gas is the dominant component of the local interstellar medium. However, owing to ionization and interaction with the heliosphere, direct sampling of neutral hydrogen in the inner heliosphere is more difficult than sampling the local interstellar neutral helium, which penetrates deep into the heliosphere. In this paper, we report on the first detailed analysis of the direct sampling of...

The ionization of helium by neutral helium atoms.

A method is described for investigating the ionization produced in helium by collisions between quasi-stationary atoms—that is, atoms possessing only thermal velocities—and a beam of neutral helium atoms with kinetic energy less than 100 eV. Ionization is shown to begin when the kinetic energy of the bombarding atoms is twice as great as the minimum kinetic energy which electrons must possess i...

The ion-optical prototype of the low energy neutral atom sensor of the Interstellar Boundary Explorer Mission (IBEX).

The direct measurement of the energetic neutral atoms originating from the heliospheric termination shock and beyond as well as neutral interstellar gas penetrating into the heliosphere requires a very sensitive neutral particle imaging instrument in the energy range of 10-1000 eV. We present the development of the prototype of the low energy sensor for the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX)...

Nuclear-Charge Screening in Positronium Formation from Helium Atoms

An analytical treatment of the electron screening effect within an active-electron model is given for positronium formation from helium atoms. A first-order distorted wave approximation with correct boundary conditions is applied to evaluate the transition amplitude. In the range of impact energy for which the introduced perturbative approach is valid, both the total and differential cross sect...
